Every Masbate trip starts here: the provincial capital (pop. ~105,000) holds the airport, the main port, the banks, and a personality of its own, equal parts fishing town and cowboy capital.

See & do

Buntod Reef Marine Sanctuary & Sandbar: 15 minutes by boat (₱500 for a small group, departures in front of Rendezvous Resort). Snorkel the sanctuary, walk the sandbar.

Swim & sweat

Eat & drink

Beef is the point in cattle country: local beef tapa at Tio Jose Cafe and Bar, 24/7 tapsilog at Overtime near the port, lechon stands all over town (permanent one in Brgy. Ibingay), grilled seafood everywhere. Racknel Restaurant is the current local favorite for beef tenderloin; Casa Ofelia is the new family table; Doux Seduction does surprisingly good French-style pastry; café culture is growing (Cafe Narra, Cafe Kristina, Ham's Cup). Sleep

Budget: GV Hotel and RedDoorz-type properties (from ~₱700). Mid-range: Rendezvous Resort near the airport, handy because Buntod boats leave from its beach. Book ahead for April (Rodeo week sells the city out).

Practical

Money: BDO, Landbank, PNB, Metrobank, Chinabank, RCBC and DBP branches cluster on Quezon St. ATMs can run dry around paydays, and this is your last reliable cash point before Ticao, Burias or the west coast. GCash works nearly everywhere.
Health: Masbate Provincial Hospital (public) plus St. Anthony Hospital (private). Anything serious gets referred to Legazpi or Manila, travel insurance is wise.
Power & internet: brownouts are a fact of life (the local grid took a beating from Typhoon Opong in late 2025). Hotels with generators earn their premium; mobile data (Globe & Smart) is decent in the city, and Starlink is spreading fast.
Getting around: tricycles rule, ₱10 to 15 per person around town; pay all seats for a private "special" run.
